Letter from the Editor: 2011 Was the Year of Mobility, Cloud and SAP HANA

Letter from the Editor: 2011 Was the Year of Mobility, Cloud and SAP HANA
This year, the community outdid itself with active contributions, enthusiastic engagement at virtual and live events, as well as collaboration across a variety of areas. So what were the liveliest topics of conversation in 2011?

First, there was mobility. At SAPPHIRE NOW in Madrid, the Mobility Campus offered participants 28 presentations, eight tables in the "test drive area," a kiosk for SAP Store for Mobile Apps, plus more than 30 live customer panels and presentations. See what's new in mobility, view SAP's mobile strategy video, and learn about the critical components of the SAP strategy: Sybase Unwired Platform and Afaria.

Second, SAP HANA drove much of the conversation this past year. If you haven't already done so, be sure to Experience SAP HANA for demos or read blogs such as Get Your Hands on an SAP HANA Sandbox System.

Finally, cloud computing generated non-stop discussions in forums, blogs and in-person events. Read SCN SVP Mark Yolton's welcome message to the cloud community, which covers offerings such as SAP BI on-demand, SAP Business ByDesign, SAP Streamwork, Sales On-Demand, and Sourcing On-Demand. In 2011, SAP also launched the SAP Cloud Computing Newsletter and announced its intention to acquire Success Factors.

Looking ahead to 2012, the community can expect more great things. First and foremost, the New SCN will provide simple, advanced and powerful features to our members. Read the New SCN - Launch Now Planned for Early 2012. For in-depth details on the project launch, also see this follow-up blog from Mark Yolton.

Sincerely,

Talila Baron
Managing Editor

  1. Top 25 SCN Blogs of All Time

We have over 3,000 SCN-ers who have written at least one blog post. To be in the top 25 is quite an achievement. Check out the new blog from SAP Mentor Mark Finnern to see which blogs made the cut. The topics cover the spectrum from Web Dynpro ABAP Exercises from TechEd 2007 to Gravity: Collaborative Business Process Modeling within Google Wave!

  2. Wealth of Resources on SAP HANA in 2011

This past year, SAP HANA took centerstage. Find the SAP PartnerEdge Portal for SAP HANA (SAP Partner Portal), the main SAP.com HANA page and SAP HANA forum on SCN. Also see the SAP HANA Overview and Roadmap and SAP HANA FAQ. Look for Updates on the SAP HANA Roadmap and Overall In-Memory Strategy, where Uddhav Gupta and Tom Kurtz provide a 60-minute overview on the latest the SAP in-memory computing world. Then read SAP Mentor Rukhshaan Omar's blog, Should Every Problem Be Solved by SAP HANA?

  3. New Blogs on SAP Business ByDesign

If you haven't seen it already, check out the SAP Business ByDesign area, which was newly launched this past year. Check out the many blogs on SAP Business ByDesign. In particular, read what happens when two worlds collide: synergies between SAP's OnDemand and OnPremise efforts from SAP Mentor Richard Hirsch.

  4. Enterprise Mobility Trends 2011

Join Sybase's Eric Lai and other industry leaders for a lively discussion on the year's hottest trends in enterprise mobility. Then check out mobile applications on SCN and IDEAPLACE for Mobility.

  5. Which Is Better: ABAP or Java?

Is ABAP better than Java? The debate raged on in 2011. Yet this article shows that it isn't a question of which development language is better; the choice depends on the situation, and sometimes the answer is both ABAP and Java. Read this SAPinsider article for more details, then see the custom development page. Also, check out Olga Dolinkskaja's ABAP Debugger Breakpoints and Watchpoints, where she defines how SAP NetWeaver 7.0 EHP2 brings a new higher-resolution statement debugging capability in the New ABAP Debugger.
